"Uum... that's not what I-- okay," Embry muttered awkwardly, dragging a hand down his face. He'd liked his job at the café, but it wasn't worth making a scene over.
Despite that being four hundred percent true, making a scene was Quil's specialty.
Embry followed Quil as his best friend stomped over twigs and dead leaves on the forest floor. Embry had just been fired, or... more like forced to quit, and Quil wasn't taking it well. In all fairness, Embry wasn't either-- his boss had never had an issue with the fact that he was Quileute before, so why now did it affect his work ethic?
Because now, people knew that some Quileutes could turn into massive wolves at will.
"Quil, slow down," he called, letting out a sigh. "It's not worth it, seriously. They made up their minds."
Relief washed over him as his friend seemed to give up on his trek over to the café, allowing Embry to stop and sit on the ground, his back resting up against a tree.
"So, this is what it's going to be like now," he acknowledged, shaking his head.
"You got your wish," he offered, a small smirk forming at his lips. "Super cool vampire hunters full-time, now," he pointed out, bumping the guy's fist.

Embry grew up surrounded by people and having no clue which of them were his direct relatives. It was a life that many of the Quileutes were accustomed to. The tendency for parents to sleep around in the tribe caused more than tension surrounding family and DNA.
For a Quileute, not knowing who your father was meant not knowing for sure if you were going to become a shifter eventually.
Embry had started to believe that maybe it wouldn't happen to him. Slowly, boys in the tribe began to change and disappear almost like a virus had hit them.
And that's what it felt like the first time-- a virus.
Embry remembers the fever that overwhelmed his scrawny build. He remembers thinking he had Mono and staying in bed while his mother brought him soup.
Most of all, he remembers what Sam's gag order did to his relationship with his mother.
They'd always been close. Embry had never been a problem-- he'd never gotten into trouble and he spent most of his time with Quil, who was remarkably good at charming parents.
Evidently, they hadn't been close enough. When Embry was well enough to get out of bed, he went for a walk and nausea hit him like a truck. He was a wolf, and Sam found him, bringing to Embry's attention the many misconceptions he'd come to believe about the entire pack. Soon, Embry became part of the wild misconceptions. When he went to hang out with Sam Uley, his mother saw the worst possible explanations.
It didn't matter if his mother thought he was out doing drugs, or vandalizing property, or trespassing. He couldn't tell her what was happening. He physically couldn't bring himself to let the words out.
Waiting for Quil to phase was agonizing. He'd lost his mother, but Quil had to know, right? He had to have some idea. It was too weird-- they'd gone through this with Jake, and it just wasn't like Embry.
Being a giant vampire-fighting wolf wasn't so bad once Quil got his turn. Embry trusted the guys in the pack more than he trusted anyone.
Even so, being a shifter was a hundred times easier before people were afraid of them.
