personality
On first glance, Jasper comes off as being very cold and aloof to people who don't know him. He looks as though he's often distracted, uncomfortable, or irritated, and not without good reason. As it is, he's not particularly social, especially compared to the majority of his ‘siblings’. He typically keeps quiet and to himself unless he's around people that he's completely comfortable with, and even within his family and others of their kind, he's easily the most detached. The emotional climate sways how he's feeling at any given moment and how he's feeling reflects back into that in a way that can be beneficial or destructive, which leads to him constantly putting effort into maintaining a stoic presence. He's the sort who only speaks when he's spoken to, and aside from that; if he has something to say, you should probablly listen because it's very important.
Jasper was raised well-mannered and well-educated gentleman. Being a soldier gave him discipline. Being a weapon gave him callousness, and understanding, and a little mental trauma. Whether he was the youngest major in the Texas cavalry because of his charisma or he was charismatic because he was the youngest major in the Texas cavalry, Jasper always had a way with people. Both due to his life experiences and his special ability he's very understanding of others's emotions, offering empathy which is.. more real than most people can ever imagine, and very well versed at telling people the things they need to hear. He's not particularly patient or forgiving when it comes to himself, however, and he doesn't necessarily feel he deserves the second chance at life he got. He has a harder time controlling himself than the rest of the Cullens, and he sees it as a huge weakness and liability, especially in the current situation. Being fiercely loyal and protective to those he cares for, he struggles a lot with being the reason they've had to relocate numerous times, and knowing that a mistake now could cost them their lives.
At at core of his being, Jasper truly hates violence- he just happens to be born of it and so, so good at it. Though he's keen to others emotions, Jasper tends to see things first and foremost from a logical, tactical viewpoint. It's definitely not hard for him to slip into a military mindset and, though he would never say he has or wants any leadership traits, he is more than capable of taking charge when the situation requires, and remaining calm and collected under pressure. His ideas of right and wrong are very cut in stone and he has a hard time understanding that there might be different truths for different people as opposed to simply a universal moral code. If anything poses a threat to his family, he'll be the first one to say that it needs to go, and if it comes down to it, by any means necessary. He's not quick to trust, and he can be harsh, but his intentions are always in the right place.
background
Jasper was born in Houston, Texas, 1843 and had a pretty good life on the American frontier. He was a charismatic person and, what might come as a shock to those who know him now, was pretty social and happy throughout his human life. He picked up hunting as a hobby at a young age from his father and spent a lot of his time outdoors. School hadn’t been a particularly normal thing at the time, so Jasper was considered well learned in that he had some basic skill reading. This ended up giving him in interest in current events and politics and in turn very strong opinions when it came time for the confederacy to succeed from the union. When the Civil War started he was too young to formally enlist, but persuaded a recruiter to let him in without giving any proof of his birthday. He moved up the ranks rapidly and by the time he actually turned eighteen, two years into the war, he was wearing a major’s uniform.
While riding to Gavelston evacuating cities, he noticed three women around the edge of an abandoned town. Though his instincts told him something was off about them, curiosity beckoned him to approach them, a decision which would ultimately change his life. The three women were vampires and, under another's command, we’re creating an army of newborns which Jasper had no choice but to become a part of. Because of his military background and his ability to control emotions, he proved seriously advantageous to Maria, and quickly became her second in command. She bought his loyalty through manipulation and misinformation, making him believe that she cared about him, and in turn he did most of her dirty work. Life in the coven was ruthless and violent, both because of the wars they fought and they ways they treated each other. Though it was hard to think of any of them as people because Jasper knew what was going to happen to them, he did end up forming a bond with another vampire, Peter, who he was able to convince Maria to keep around.
When it came time for Peter's mate to be killed, he attempted to escape, and Jasper allowed the two of them to leave without pursuit. After a number of years, Peter came back, telling him about a different way to live up north, away from the warring covens he'd accepted as a fact of vampire life. Jasper ultimately went with them, and lived with Peter and Charlotte for a time, although dwelling on what he'd done and feeding on humans still caused him resentment and he eventually chose to set off on his own. He attempted to feed less, sometimes not at all, but the hunger would always become overwhelming, a vicious cycle ending in carnage. He wandered around the country alone for years before finally running into a diner in Philadelphia where he met Alice. He didn’t understand how she knew him, or how she knew most of the things she told him, but he was drawn to her and her happiness, her understanding, and the new life she proposed for them. She gave him hope and he would be forever indebted to her for that.
Alice had probably known that they were going to fall in love before they even met, but it didn’t take long for Jasper to understand himself. He cared for her more than he had ever cared for anyone in his life. Jasper had his hesitance about joining another coven, but trusted Alice and knew doing so was going to make her happy. Like she’d said, the coven accepted them very willingly, even after an explanation his past. Switching to the 'vegetarian' lifestyle was, and still is, a challenge for him but he eventually started getting better at it, enough to join the Cullens in attempting to portray a normal human life. Sometimes Jasper was concerned with the amount of trust, amount of risk that their family put themselves in on a regular basis, but he also saw the good in people for the first time. He developed skills aside from the army and learned more than he ever thought was imaginable. School dances and sibling squabbles were a fun distraction. But like the books always say, history repeats itself. People fear what they don't understand. And they try to destroy the things that they fear. The idea of a war was familiar, comfortable even.. in a fucked up sort of way, but this time they had so much more to lose.
